Continuing the tradition that I began with "Little Angel (Cassidy's Song)" on Refuge, and "Still A Child (Hayley's Song)" on The Calling, this is a song written for my one and only son, Eaven. That's his maniacal giggle that you hear at the beginning of the song.
After Meloney and I had Hayley, we decided that we were done having children. We had two beautiful daughters, and that was enough. Or, so we thought...
I sometimes wonder how hard God laughs when he sees us making plans, like we know what we're doing. Even though we had planned to have no more children, God had other plans for us. 9 years after Hayley's birth, God touched our hearts and led us to become a foster family. Our first placement was this beautiful, one-month old baby boy. The placement was only supposed to be for 4-6 months, but one thing led to another and suddenly he was 2 years old and adoptable. By this point, we had become Mama and Daddy and we couldn't picture our family without this sweet little boy, so what else were we to do? We adopted Eaven in November of 2013.
The lyrics to this song are actually based around a poem that I wrote the day that I found out that we got to keep him. The song is simply me, as a father, embracing the awesome responsibility of raising a son. Eaven is a happy, trusting kid who sees so much joy in everything around him. His personality dictates that everything needs to be FUN! That's a quality that I admire in him and I hope it never completely goes away. I love that kid!
lyrics
I see a brightness in your eyes
as you look at the world around you.
You take delight in all the simple things.
I wish I could see the way that you do.
I know there’s so much more to life
than what we can see
and I know it’s up to me to show you the way.
CHORUS: What the future holds no one really knows
But it sure looks bright from where I stand.
And come what may, I will never ever stray
from teaching you how to be a man.
I’m not the wisest man in the world,
but I can show you how to be.
I don’t deserve you in my life,
but you’ve been given to me
There’s so much to this life
that I want you to see.
I can’t wait to show you the way.
CHORUS 2x
