As far as entire songs go (music and lyrics together), this is the oldest song on the album. By my calculations, this song is (as of this writing) 25 years old! Well, better late than never!
This is, quite obviously, a love song written to my wife, Meloney, back when she was still just my girlfriend. We had dated for a while, then broke up for a while and became friends again, then got back together. This was written as we were beginning our relationship for the second time. I wanted to express my feelings for her and let her know how devoted to her that I truly was, so I wrote this song for her.
At the time, I was still singing in a gospel quartet (Ariel), so this song really didn't fit our sound. Not long after this song was written, I started singing and writing with Q, my group for the rest of the 1990s, but this song really didn't fit in there either. I've considered recording it every solo album, but this is the one where I finally did it. I think it was worth waiting for.
By the way, for those of you looking for a spiritual message in this song, there is one. Just picture Christ singing this song to his bride (the church... us). He really does want to be our one and only love!
lyrics
I’ve had my eye on you for awhile.
And every thought of you… well, it makes me smile.
You may not have noticed , but I want to be
your one and only love.
But it’s up to you to give me a try.
There’s so much more to me than what meets the eye.
There’s so much I want to give to you so you’ll be satisfied.
CHORUS: Expect the unexpected from me
and I’ll do for you what you’ve never dreamed.
You can expect the unexpected from me
and I’ll be your everything.
You can depend on me, it’s true.
I live my life completely for you.
Everything that I could possibly do
to be your one and only love,
I offer it, no strings attached, to you.
There’s so much more to me than what meets the eye.
There’s so much I want to give to you so you’ll be satisfied.
CHORUS
I want to be your everything.
I can give you so much more than what you expect of me.
There’s so much more that I want you to see.
CHORUS 3x
