Do you know someone that just won't listen? No matter what the consequences might be to their decisions, they still want to go it alone and do things the way THEY want to do them. That type of person is who this song is addressed to.
Not based on any specific circumstance, this song is a fictional one-sided conversation between me and a dear friend who just won't listen to anybody. In the narrative of the story, we see that he has gone down the wrong path in life, made some major decisions without seeking wisdom or advice from anybody, didn't heed any warnings from his friends and family, and he's now in a really tough spot with no way out. So now, after all of this, he has no idea what to do and how he got in this position.
This song is simply a reminder to him that if he had just listened to someone and sought out some wisdom, he would not be in this predicament. Out of selfishness, pride, and a desire to "follow the crowd", the character in the story fallen in way too deep. So deep, in fact, that he STILL won't listen or think of the ones who love him enough to tell him the truth. Crazy, right?
Before we're too hard on our fictional friend in this story, let's not forget: ALL of us are like this at one point or another. This song is not here to serve as an "I told you so" as much as it is a reminder to myself of how I need to approach the circumstances I'm faced with. No matter how smart or experienced I might think I am, there's always someone else in my life who has been there and can offer some wisdom. I just need to THINK about it!
Off you go, on your own,
tryin’ to get away from home,
not even pausing just to say goodbye.
Heading where the grass is green,
things just aren’t as they seem.
Now you’ve lost it all and you don’t know why.
CHORUS: You should’ve spoken to me first
before going your own way.
I could’ve saved you so much time.
You could’ve had a better day.
You should’ve taken the time to think of me,
‘cause I was thinkin’ of you.
You could have so much more
if you’d just think of me.
Think of me.
I still think of you,
wondering what it is you do.
You don’t even know just what you’ve got.
I wish you’d think of me,
pay attention, hear me.
Notice me standing here next to you.
BRIDGE: You can’t be your own with your heart of stone,
and now you’re all alone.
You wanna be a clone of everybody else…
