This song actually began as a love song for my wife. I wrote most of these lyrics when I was in the middle of an intense period of writing in 2006, but I had no music to go with it at the time so I put it away for a while.

When I began putting together the Fresh Hope album, I came up with what I thought was a really good melody and began looking through my journal for some lyrical ideas. I came across these lyrics and realized, with a little adjusting, they worked for this song just fine.

This song could very well be sung by either parent, expressing the joy they are experiencing with the birth of their first child. However, I look at this song from Joseph's perspective. Even though he knew that Jesus was the child conceived by Mary with the Holy Spirit, I'm sure that he was a typical "proud Papa" just the same. Imagine how he must have felt, being the earthly "father-figure" of The Messiah! What a responsibility! To be chosen by God to raise Jesus must have been scary, but it was surely something worth celebrating!
