Refuge is the debut solo release by independent a cappella artist, Eric Gwin. This 6-track EP was released on April 8, 2001 in CD and download formats and available exclusively from ericgwin.com
. In 2011, Refuge was re-issued as Refuge: 10th Anniversary Edition, having been expanded into a full-length, 12-track album.
"After singing in a cappella groups from 1989 to 2000, I began writing songs with the intent of licensing them to other a cappella artists via the Internet. Much to my surprise, after placing several demos of tracks on my website in early 2000, I began to hear from listeners asking when the album would be available. I then began to record the songs properly and the Refuge EP was the result.
"In 2011, in celebration of the CD's 10th anniversary, I went back into the studio and re-mixed the original tracks, replacing some of the vocals in some cases, and digitally re-mastered Refuge. I also added 6 more tracks (all written and/or recorded during the Refuge sessions), expanding the CD into a full-length album, Refuge: 10th Anniversary Edition."
All of the sounds on this release (like all of Eric's subsequent solo releases) are vocally or anatomically produced. Apart from his daughter's "in-utero" heartbeat on one track, all of the sounds are performed by Eric.
